Lower Manhattan Open Hearts is organizing a free book fair in Tribeca for neighbors experiencing homelessness!
We need volunteers to help organize donations, help folks “shop” for books, and help folks get from shelters to the event.

Speak Up for a New Shelter in Lower Manhattan!
Background
A new shelter for adult families (adult couples, families with adult children, etc.) is being planned for the former Radisson Hotel at 52 William St. On Wednesday, April 15 at 6:00 PM, Manhattan Community Board 1 is meeting to hear about the project, and we expect folks opposed to it will attend. If you live, work, or go to school in Lower Manhattan, we could use your voice expressing support for welcoming homeless neighbors to this site!
Take Action
The #1 need is for folks to provide comments virtually (on Zoom or phone) during the meeting (Wednesday 4/15, meeting begins at 6:00 PM) orin person at the meeting at 1 Centre St (Wednesday 4/15, meeting begins at 6:00 PM).
Haven’t spoken at a Community Board meeting before? No worries—the board hears from members of the public all the time at hearings like these, and Open Hearts will be there with you every step of the way. We’ll provide suggested talking points, connect you with other folks who will be speaking up, and help you navigate the logistics.

Game Night at a Shelter in Lower Manhattan

Street Care Kit Assembly and Distribution in Lower Manhattan
Our Lower Manhattan Open Hearts chapter is assembling and distributing care kits to neighbors experiencing street homelessness. We need volunteers to help assemble and distribute kits near Union Square (location upon RSVP). We’ll be meeting together at a local church to assemble the kits, and then we’ll go out together to distribute them.

Lower Manhattan Winter Coat Drive
Lower Manhattan Open Hearts is looking for winter coat donations for adults of all genders in all sizes! Do you have any new or lightly used coats taking up space in your closet? Donate them to your neighbors living in a shelter or supportive housing!
We’ll be collecting warm winter coats through the week of December 15th. Here’s how to help:

Write a note to a neighbor
Don’t have a coat? Submit a kindness note! We’ll place a note in each coat before donating. To get the template and add your note (you can do this virtually; we’ll handle the printing and placing the notes in coats!), email Jayme at jayme@openheartsinitiative.org, and she’ll send it to you.

Women's Summer Clothing Drive
Lower Manhattan Open Hearts is requesting new or used summer clothing and accessories (in good condition) for a downtown women’s shelter. We are accepting t-shirts, shorts, skirts, shoes, sunglasses, fashion jewelry and more! All styles and sizes appreciated. Lower Manhattan Open Hearts is collecting donations for their warm workwear clothing drive for residents of a downtown women’s shelter.
Items Needed
New or gently-used business casual clothing of all sizes, including but not limited to:
Cardigans/sweaters
Vests
Collared or plain shirts
Dress pants
Blazers
Coats and jackets
NEW:

Thermalwear
Underwear
Donations of clothing across the gender spectrum are welcome. Please make sure all clothing is washed before donating!
How to Donate
Two options:
Drop off donations in Harlem on February 18, 19, or 20 from 10:30am-3pm. Contact jayme@openheartsinitiative.org to register to drop off and get the details.
Pick up available in Queens and Brooklyn through February 23. Contact mahirahbillah@gmail.com to schedule a pickup.
