Homelessness: Learning From Experience
Upcoming Events
OHI’s Homelessness: Learning from Experience group meets monthly on the Upper East Side. This group brings together housed and unhoused neighbors to share experiences and inform our work as an organization. It’s casual, “clubhouse” atmosphere where we build connections, answer questions, and do our best to learn from and provide support to each other. Participants frequently include folks who are formerly homeless who’ve recently found housing, folks living in shelter or in supportive housing, interested and engaged volunteers, and OHI staff.
Our programming varies from month to month. Sometimes we’ll have presentations by guest speakers or representatives from other local non profit organizations. We’ve also had getting to know you sessions, game nights (or days!), and workshops on advocacy issues. We pride ourselves on keeping a safe space for our community to share their thoughts on current events that directly impact our lives. As we can, we also try to share cultural opportunities that people may not always have the easiest access to.
We do this all over food (usually pizza!) and provide attendees with a 2-trip Metrocard. At this time, we don't have a virtual option. If there are further questions, or if anyone would like to contribute ideas for discussion - feel to reach out to Will Woods directly at will@openheartsinitiative.org.
